Video manipulation and composition is a complex art and usually requires expensive video creation software. This places your small business in a bind if you need video work done but can’t justify the expensive top editing software to do it. Avidemux is an example of a free third-party video editing program intended to actually fill the needs of relatively serious video editing and sequencing. Produced by developers with video editing experience, it makes sure the key functions absent from other free video programs are present, and can compete with the big name, expensive technologies.
Being free, it’s a viable choice for any business size. However, as it is still somewhat limited, and not being currently updated, it’s best for small businesses, or for startups on a tight budget.
Features
- Multiple Formats – Import and output to the standard formats compatible with all top video editing tools, with no conversion or translation necessary. Capture DVD, AVI, MPEG, MP4 and many more files types, and render out to standard quality, HD, and even 4% with the right adjustments. Compatibility like this is rare in these free 3rd party tools.
- Video Filters – Comprehensive video filter manager makes it easy to add effects, filters and other advanced video manipulation for correction, processing and the like. Advanced filtering like this is another rarity for 3rd party video tools, and these are nearly as advanced as what big name editors can do.
- Advanced Interlacing – Interlacing is a huge pain, and a lot of tools don’t even directly address it beyond maybe an on/off switch. Avidemux offers advanced interlacing and de-interlacing controls that aren’t just a binary on or off state, which lets you handle adjustments of older video types, making this platform able to handle a wider range of sources.
- Full Editing Control – This software offers a full, comprehensive editing interface for cropping, splicing, and cutting from multiple timelines. You can shoot, import, process, splice, and master your video from a single application—no need for secondary tools, unless you’re working with a proprietary Apple video format.
- Simple Interface – Interface is very straightforward and easy to figure out. If you understand the basic abstract concepts behind video editing and manipulation, this program won’t need any real training or learning to get the hang of.
- Open Source – This program and the extensions/filters are all open source concepts, meaning that if you or your staff have decent programming knowledge, you can build off of this to even exceed the big name editing software. It’s no longer updated, which means that as time moves forward, you may have to do a little coding to get it to work, though.
Pricing
This software is entirely free and open-source. Licensing is a bit dubious though, meaning it’s hard to say if you could use the code in commercial development beyond the making of video. In other words, whether or not you could market software based off of this code is kind of up to interpretation due to multiple, conflicting licenses involved. Best not to try it.
The free nature means any business size could use this, though some hang ups we’ll address below make it less than ideal for big businesses. Ironically, it’s usually the other way around. |
